Ping.fm Blog: Ping.fm / Blog / The Woes of Uncontrollable Downtime

Interesting that you used 3 alternative methods of communication to inform users.

When Jaiku had a planned outage that overran slightly, they chose to use, err, precisely zero alternative methods of informing a disappointed and frustrated user base.

Glad your back. How's that song go? You never know what you've got 'til it's gone…

    For a while, I thought Ping.fm had gone Titsup.com.

I felt like a dog with a toy — it's not until it's gone when you really want to play with it...

Thanks for being up-front and overly communicative during the outage. People can forgive downtime a lot more than bad customer service. Thanks for all your hard work, guys!

How about setting up an alternate domain (pingfm.com appears to be taken, oh well) pointed at your servers in case the .fm TLD goes tits-up again?

I am really, really happy because of this! I tried HelloTxt.com in the meanwhile while your service was down, and I could gladly say that Ping.fm is better than it, though Hellotxt still has much time to make space in the intar tubez. :)

I'm very glad to know that the site is back, I tried to login earlier today and wasn't able to. I only joined the site yesterday after I found out about it from Charles Heflin who is BIG in social media circles and then today when I couldn't find it I thought...what the heck is going on, did I type the name in wrong, why wasn't an announcement made. I appreciate your transparency about all this, it's better to be straight with people and tell them like it is.

    Welcome back...
You had me worried that the "Global Economic Depression" had claimed another victim...

I recommend all users follow you on Twitter... tis how I found out about the reason for your woes...

Now... what are GoDaddy going to do with all that advertising revenue they gained from that nice little GoDaddy landing page that was in place..
I'm sure a charitable donation to a place of your choice by GoDaddy would not go amiss (especially coming up to Christmas).
Even in Beta, there must have been a fair few clicks made on their landing page by your user base...
Go on, push em for a donation...

Thanks Adam & Sean. It's great to see your open and honest discussion about the downtime. As you can imagine many of us were rather traumatized after coming to rely on your wonderful app. I was a bit harsh on GoDaddy in my blog report on this, so I'll put a note linking to your blog post.

    Adam & Sean,

After my first DNS downtime as an entreprenuer, I learned a valuable lesson. Get a third-party DNS service that offers Dynamic DNS and redundant servers in different geo locations.

This is the best thing I ever did, and it cost practically nothing. When our datacenter was cut off, we were able to switch to backup servers in a different location in minutes.

We use Nettica, but there are many.

Good luck with the venture. Service looks great!

It happens to the best of us... it hard for people to understand that these things happen.

    I still haven't received my Ping.fm bill. :D
